Lithium vs. Lead-Acid Forklift Batteries: Which Is Right for You?

If you are shopping for an electric stacker, pallet jack, or counterbalance truck, one choice affects your daily operation more than almost any other: the battery. Lithium-ion and lead-acid both do the job, but they behave very differently day to day, and cost very differently over the life of the machine. Here is how to decide.

Lithium-ion costs more up front but charges fast, needs almost no maintenance, and lasts far longer. It is the better choice for busy or multi-shift operations. Charging: the difference you will feel every day

Lead-acid batteries need a full, uninterrupted charge followed by a cool-down period, and repeatedly topping them up shortens their life. In busy operations that often means swapping in a second battery to keep working — extra cost, extra labor, and somewhere to store and charge the spare.

Lithium-ion supports opportunity charging: plug in during breaks, lunch, or between shifts, and top up without harming the battery. A full charge typically takes just 1–4 hours. For most single-truck operations, that eliminates battery swaps entirely and keeps the machine available all day.

Maintenance: hands-on vs. hands-off

Lead-acid batteries need regular watering, clean terminals, and periodic equalizing to avoid sulfation. Skip that upkeep and capacity fades early. They also off-gas while charging, so they need a ventilated charging area. Lithium-ion is essentially maintenance-free — no watering, no acid, no equalizing, and no off-gassing or acid-spill risk.

Lifespan and total cost of ownership

Up front, lead-acid wins — it is the cheaper battery to buy. But the lifetime picture usually flips. Lithium-ion commonly delivers around 3,000+ charge cycles versus roughly 1,000–1,500 for lead-acid, so a lithium pack often outlives two or more lead-acid batteries. It also holds steady voltage and wastes less energy in charging, and it eliminates swaps and watering labor. So while lithium sticker price is higher, the total cost of ownership over the machine life is frequently lower. For a light-use machine that sits idle much of the day, lead-acid lower entry price may still be the smarter spend.

So which should you choose?

Choose lithium-ion if you run multiple shifts or cycle the machine heavily all day, want to eliminate battery swaps and watering, or care most about long-term cost, uptime, and consistent performance.

Lead-acid still makes sense if you run a single shift with plenty of charging downtime, want the lowest possible purchase price, and move modest volumes.
